Workforce
Literacy Programs
Read Right was first
implemented in an occupational setting in 1990
with a group of sawmill employees who were
embarrassed and reluctant to participate in
improvement teams because of their reading
problems. Managers were skeptical of the Read Right program but decided to
run a pilot project.
Much to their amazement, employees averaged less
than 8 hours of tutoring per grade level
advanced, 92% faster than the national standard
for adult literacy programs as specified by the
U.S. Department of Education. And the employees
loved it!! They could see and feel their own
reading improve!
Proven
Success
Read Right tutoring
permanently improves a student's reading
abilities, in most cases totally eliminating any
reading problems. Students make significant and
permanent gains in reading and comprehension with
a corresponding boost in self-esteem.
Read Right has been
successfully implemented at over 80 industrial
locations across the United States.
Implementation
and Quality Assurance
Read Right consultants will
come to your site and conduct reading
consultations for your employees. Local tutors
will be trained in the Read Right
system and will provide private, confidential
tutoring for those needing help. Read Right will supply a specially tailored
library and support materials. It is not unusual for as
many as 20 to 30% of the employees in a plant to participate
in the program to improve their reading skills.
Read Right's quality
assurance program includes a computerized
tracking system to monitor individual student
progress and extensive tutor and student
follow-up to assure overall program
effectiveness.

Measuring the Return on Investment
The bottom line impact of improving the reading
abilities of employees and in the case of immigrants the
ability to communicate well in English is very difficult to
measure. Manufacturing by its very nature is so complex and
has so many variables that to separate out a basic skill such
as improved reading and say that is why the bottom line
improved is nigh on to impossible with any degree of accuracy.
What makes the Deknatel, Inc. study so interesting is that
management tied two programs together and achieved very measurable
results.
Because they are located in Southern Massachusetts,
Deknatel has many first generation Portuguese women assembly
workers for whom English is a second language. Deknatel
management found they couldn't train these employees well in
their continuous improvement classes unless they first
improved their reading and English communication skills. So
Deknatel management combined the two programs. The result, Deknatel employees generated over
50 continuous improvement projects with measurable first year
savings of $2 million. "We couldn't have done it without
the reading program," said Robert Pelletier, vice
president of manufacturing. Read The Article

Improving Reading Skills and the Impact on Safety
Improving reading and English communication skills as
a foundation was a key factor in implementing a highly successful
Behavior Based Safety Process at the Simpson Korbel, CA
Redwood Sawmill. In 1997 this mill was recognized with the
first place safety award for large sawmills in the Western
United States and Canada. Simpson's sawmill had no lost time
injuries in four consecutive years! (Large sawmills are
classified as those with over 500,000 man hours worked per
year.) "Read Right not only gave our employees the skills
they needed to successfully complete the safety training and
to read and understand the procedures, it gave them the self
confidence and self esteem to volunteer as safety observers
and to do the job well," said Randy Robertson, Labor
Relations and Employee Development Supervisor at the Korbel mill. Read The Article

Information
The Read Right system was
developed and refined over a period of 20 years
by Dr. Dee Tadlock, past president of the College
Reading and Learning Association and founder of Read Right Systems. Over
55,500 students have been successfully tutored using
Read Right. They have progressed
at an average rate of 13.7 hours of instruction
per grade level advanced. This
includes ESL and EFL students. Native English
speaking students are progressing an average of
one year's growth in reading for every 12.3 hours
of tutoring. More: Read
