Read Right® methodology is
responsible for helping two major manufacturers receive
national industry awards for outstanding literacy programs in
the last three years.
Weyerhaeuser and International Paper both use
Read Right
to improve adult workplace literacy. Weyerhaeuser received the
Sales Association of the Paper Industry (SAPI) award for
literacy at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York City, in 2000
and International Paper received the award in 2002.
Between 1993 and 1999, Weyerhaeuser implemented the program
at 23 facilities. At the time it received SAPI’s literacy
award, 1,181 employees had received 28,680 hours of tutoring.
In its application for the award, International Paper’s
Riegelwood Pulp and Paper Mill noted: "It became apparent
that many of our employees could not read well enough to
access the computer-based portion of (job-site) training. …From
the business perspective this simply was not acceptable to us
to have employees whose reading challenges prevented them from
reaching their full potential...."
A plant Learning Team researched different methodologies
for remediating workers and decided upon Read Right,
a new, innovative program used at International Paper’s
Laurel, Mississippi facility.
In the twelve-month period starting January 2001, 67
employees participated in the Riegelwood program. Combined,
the group achieved more than 100 grade levels of improvement
in 1670 hours of tutoring.
"We receive consistent feedback from our employees
about how eliminating reading problems has transformed their
lives," the application states. Said one employee:
"When I started the program, I struggled very hard at
trying to read. It would take me an hour and a half to read
three or four pages in one book. Now I can read about two
books in one hour. …When I have improved enough, I plan to
go back to school and get my diploma. I want to study to be an
electrician."
