Correctional Centers
Picture of person in jail "Adding Read Right® at the Benton-Franklin Juvenile Justice Center proved to be an excellent decision. The students enjoyed the tutoring and the way they quickly improved their reading skills is very encouraging."

Mr. Richard Hare
Education Director

Read Right® Correctional Centers Programs

An estimated 90% or more of incarcerated juveniles and adults have serious reading problems. Small wonder they have trouble being successful when they are released. Their disability severely limits their chances of finding a decent job. If you can't read, how many jobs can you find that will support a wife and family? Many of these youth and adults can't even read and fill out a job application. And if they do get an entry level job they often can't read well enough to participate in the company training that will lead to advancement and a promising career. Small wonder that so many end up being arrested again.

On average, Read Right tutoring can completely eliminate a detainee's reading problem in less than six months of tutoring.  The ability to read opens a whole new array of employment and educational options for released prisoners and can reduce recidivism. As reading skills improve, self-esteem and self-confidence grow and incidents of unacceptable behavior drop significantly.

Implementation and Quality Assurance
Read Right consultants will come to your institution and conduct reading consultations. Local tutors and educators will be thoroughly trained in the Read Right theory and methodology and will provide tutoring for those needing help. Read Right will supply a specially tailored library and other materials.

Read Right's quality assurance program includes a computerized tracking system to monitor student progress and extensive teacher and student follow-up to assure overall program effectiveness.

Case Study Mission Creek Juvenile Detention Center, Belfair, WA
A project was implemented to tutor youthful offenders at the Mission Creek School for one hour a day five days each week for the purpose of testing the effectiveness of improving the reading skills of this population. The project was designed to address the following questions:

How serious are the reading problems of these youthful offenders?

Is the Read Right methodology effective for teaching 15-20 year olds in the juvenile detention environment?

Will the students notice significant improvements in their reading?

Would Read Right tutoring in Critical Thinking Skills be productive in this environment?

Could job skills materials be effectively incorporated into the tutoring?

The student gains in reading far surpassed the expectations of the staff at Mission Creek. "They have incredible results. I don't think we can afford to ignore this," said Jan Blasé, Principal of the School at Mission Creek. "We have the potential to impact every aspect of these kids lives."
